馬里蘭州的麥克亨利堡 Fort McHenry 是美國國歌的起源地 ，美國國歌星條旗的作者是Francis Scott Key，隨著美國跟殖民地母國英國的衝突越演越烈 ， 兩邊都累積了許多戰俘，Francis Scott Key當時就是從這個堡壘出發代表美國跟英軍談判換俘。
他到了一艘英國的軍艦上，談判換俘任務很順利的達成了，他到船艙下跟關押的美國犯人說：你們明天就可以自由了 ， 可是這時的英軍海軍將領跟Francis Scott Key 說英國已經對殖民地下了最後通牒 ， 他們仍然會遵守協定把犯人放回去 ， 但一切都已經不重要了 ， 英國將領說要是在堡壘上的星條旗仍然不降下 ， 殖民地仍然不投降 ， 他們的海軍大軍就會徹底地把堡壘摧毀 ，殖民地沒有理會英軍的最後通牒 ， 於是英軍就展開猛烈的砲擊 ， 在每一次砲擊過後 ， 船艙中的犯人就會問 Francis Scott Key ，黎明了嗎? 我們的國旗還在嗎? 而 Francis Scott Key 每一次的回答都是 Yes, our flag was still there 。 這就是產生美國國歌歌詞的時空背景 。

Fort McHenry離Baltimore市中心大概15分鐘的車程，Fort McHenry 控制了Patapsco 的出海口，戰略位置重要。
